Arvin Jake Adovo, a Masters student from Melbourne University, Australia, has collaborated with Project Zacchaeus (PZC) to delve into the challenges and strategies surrounding solid waste management (SWM) in Puerto Princesa. Over the course of nearly a month, Arvin engaged closely with the Eco Kolek team, gaining firsthand insight into their waste collection processes and the vital role of Eco Warriors in tackling SWM issues and plastic pollution.

Arvin's immersion included active participation in a range of PZC's activities, from strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders, including city and barangay LGUs, households, and businesses, to attending roadshows, orientations, and SWM training sessions. His hands-on involvement extended to door-to-door waste collection, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of the practical challenges and innovative solutions being implemented.

This collaborative effort is set to culminate in a detailed research report from Arvin, which will offer valuable insights and recommendations for enhancing waste management strategies. His work will contribute to refining and advancing PZC's initiatives, supporting their mission to improve waste management practices and promote environmental sustainability in Puerto Princesa.

Eco Kolek recently organized a basic vehicle maintenance training session aimed at extending the lifespan of waste collection vehicles. The training, designed for Eco Warriors, focused on practical steps for vehicle care and maintenance.

The session saw the participation of 12 Eco Warriors, with 5 males and 7 females in attendance. The training covered essential maintenance techniques, including routine inspections, basic repairs, and proper care procedures to ensure the vehicles remain in optimal condition.

Two Eco Warriors from Sicsican, Jose Inocencio and Glen Castronuevo, played a key role in the training by sharing their personal maintenance practices. Their insights provided valuable, real-world examples of effective vehicle upkeep, enhancing the learning experience for all participants.

By equipping the Eco Warriors with this knowledge, Project Zacchaeus together with Eco Kolek aims to improve the efficiency and longevity of the waste collection fleet, ultimately contributing to more sustainable waste management practices. This initiative underscores the project's commitment to not only improving waste collection processes but also ensuring that the tools essential to these efforts are well-maintained and reliable.

The Eco Warriors recently completed a basic first aid training session organized by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). The session, held to enhance the preparedness of these community advocates, was attended by 16 participants—7 males and 9 females.

The training was focused on equipping the Eco Warriors with the necessary skills to respond effectively to various emergencies, including fire outbreaks and vehicular collisions. The participants were guided through the proper procedures for assessing and managing accidents, ensuring that they are well-prepared to act quickly and efficiently in critical situations.

In addition to theoretical instruction, the training emphasized practical application. The Eco Warriors engaged in hands-on demonstrations, practicing the use of triangular bandages on one another. This hands-on approach allowed them to gain confidence and proficiency in applying first aid techniques, which are vital in stabilizing victims before professional medical help arrives.

The CDRRMO’s training session is part of a broader effort to build resilience within communities by empowering the Eco Warriors with essential life-saving skills. By ensuring that these committed individuals are prepared to handle emergencies, the initiative contributes to the safety and well-being of the neighborhoods they serve.
