PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Project Zacchaeus (PZC), through its Eco Kolek program, integrated circular economy principles and waste segregation protocols at the National Convention and Congress of Civil Registry Personnel, held at the Edward Hagedorn Coliseum from April 7 to 9.

The three-day national event convened delegates and key stakeholders from local government units across all regions of the Philippines. To manage the environmental impact of the large-scale gathering, Eco Kolek deployed a 31-person team comprising 10 administrative staff and 21 professionalized Eco Warriors.

Institutionalizing sustainable event practices

Operating a dedicated exhibition kiosk, the Eco Kolek team facilitated technical orientations on proper waste segregation and the operational framework of the circular economy. The initiative was designed to showcase the viability of integrating sustainable solid waste management systems into national institutional events.

The deployment yielded measurable operational improvements in attendee compliance. According to the PZC post-activity assessment, adherence to waste segregation protocols—particularly regarding the disposal of plastic bottles and packaging—progressed from baseline levels on the first day to an "excellent" rating by the event's conclusion.

Program organizers attributed this improvement to the strategic placement of designated waste bins and the continuous, active enforcement by the Eco Warriors and coliseum representatives.

Strategic stakeholder engagement

The exhibit also served as a platform for high-level stakeholder engagement. Eco Kolek personnel distributed technical brochures and eco-friendly merchandise while discussing localized plastic recovery strategies with key officials, including the leadership of the Philippine Association of Civil Registrars.

The successful implementation of waste management protocols at the congress validates the scalability of the Eco Kolek model. The deployment provides a replicable framework for mitigating the environmental footprint of large-scale institutional gatherings while promoting inclusive environmental programs at the national level.
