Luzon, Philippines — Leaders of the Agricultural and Fishery Councils (AFC) in the MIMAROPA region underscored the importance of policy reforms and collaborative leadership during the Agricultural and Fishery Council – Luzon Congress 2023, emphasizing strategies aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector amid evolving challenges.
Among the key figures recognized during the congress was John Vincent Gastanes, Chief Executive Officer of Farm Konekt and a member of the MIMAROPA AFC leadership. Gastanes, together with fellow council chairpersons in the region, has been actively involved in advancing policy directions that address critical issues affecting farmers and fisherfolk.
Discussions during the congress focused on key priority areas, including climate change adaptation, digital transformation in agriculture, contract farming systems, and improved production strategies. These policy directions are expected to enhance resilience in farming communities, improve efficiency in agricultural operations, and expand market access for smallholder producers.
The collective leadership of the MIMAROPA AFC was commended for its role in shaping policies that respond to both local and national agricultural concerns. Officials noted that the council’s initiatives are aligned with broader government efforts to modernize the sector while ensuring inclusivity and sustainability.
Stakeholders emphasized that addressing climate-related risks remains a top priority, with leaders advocating for climate-smart agricultural practices and stronger support systems for vulnerable farming communities. At the same time, the integration of digital tools was highlighted as a key driver in improving productivity, streamlining supply chains, and connecting farmers to wider markets.
The congress also underscored the importance of contract farming arrangements and strengthened production planning as mechanisms to stabilize farmer income and reduce uncertainties in agricultural trade.
Participants described the contributions of AFC leaders in MIMAROPA as instrumental in driving regional progress. Their efforts, they said, are helping lay the groundwork for long-term agricultural development, benefiting not only farmers and fisherfolk but also rural communities across the region.
The Luzon Congress served as a platform for knowledge exchange, policy alignment, and collaboration among agricultural stakeholders, reaffirming the commitment of leaders and institutions to build a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable agricultural sector in the Philippines.
